BINTULU (Jan 14): Sarawak's journey towards a new economy in green energy began today as 20,000 metric tonnes of methanol cargo set sail from the Sarawak Methanol Complex in Tanjung Kidurong to China.

Present to witness the historic milestone was Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who expressed his excitement with the landmark achievement by Sarawak Petchem in methanol production, marking it as one of the few methanol production facilities globally.

"Today, I have the honor of witnessing the export of methanol from Sarawak to China, with two vessels carrying a total of 20,000 tonnes of methanol—10,000 tonnes per ship.

"This milestone represents a significant accomplishment in producing a complex substance like methanol from gas.

"Kudos to the Sarawak Petchem team, who, despite initial challenges, have managed to resolve issues and advance the development of Sarawak Petchem," said Abang Johari at a press conference after the event.

Abang Johari also officiated the groundbreaking ceremony of Sarawak Petchem's second project, Green Methanol.

He said this new project aligns with the transition to green energy and promises to contribute to the methanol industry, particularly in the maritime sector.

"This project will position Sarawak as a region dedicated to reducing carbon emissions, creating a low-carbon factory, and elevating Malaysia as a nation committed to green energy transition.

"Sarawak plays a vital role in supporting Malaysia's green energy initiatives," he said.
